Jimmy Connors once said" in an era of specialists, you are either a clay court specialist, a grass court specialist, a hard court specialist…or you are Roger Federer.
The best player ever to grace the tennis court Roger Federer won his 16th grand slam title on Sunday by beating Andy Murray in straight sets 6-3,6-4,7-6 to claim his fourth Australian open and his first Grand Slam title as a father, this win tied him for most Australian open victories with Andre Agassi.
Questions were asked at the beginning of the year if Federer will be motivated to win more titles, he answered his critics by winning the Australian open, he nearly made it 16 grand slam in last year's US open when he was surprised by Del Porto, who he has previously beaten in their last five encounters, he came back stronger and silenced his critics and claimed his first grand slam title of the year.
Federer was 4 years old when Boris Becker his childhood hero won his first Wimbledon title in 1985,Federer watched tennis matches on the television for hours on end, incidentally Federer won his first grand slam title at the Wimbledon open in 2003 defeating Mark Philippoussis and claimed his first Australian open a year later, since then he has not looked back and the climax was when he equalled Pete Sampras record of 14 grand slam titles when he won the French open last year, he now surpassed Sampras record by winning the Wimbledon title later in the year and now won his 16 Grand slam title and cemented his status as the greatest tennis player of all time.
Federer is an all-court player known for his fluid style of play and shotmaking, also he is one of the best volleyers in the game today. David Foster Wallace once described Federer's exceptional speed, fluidity and brute force of his forehand motion as a great liquid whip while another tennis legend John Mcenroe referred to Federer forehand as the greatest shot in our sports. His serves are usually difficult to read because he tosses the ball in the same spot no matter where he intends to serve and turns his back to his opponents during the motion.
His on-court playing style has given him many different nicknames such as Federer express (Fed Express) for quickly dispatching an opponent in a tennis match. With 3 grand slams coming up this year (Wimbledon, French and US opens) who can bet against Federer winning one or two grand slams and possibly the three Grand slams, Federer greatest rival right now is himself as complacency and maybe lack of motivation may set in, but as he said he is still motivated to go on winning more titles, with this kind of form and Federer still highly motivated maybe players like Nadal and Murray should consider taking up another sports, football perhaps?
