The US Mission which witnessed the  election in Anambra has welcomed the outcome of the gubernatorial election in the state , saying it was  credible despite the poor organisation evident at some polling stations.

According to a press statement from the US Embassy in Abuja, at least two of the losing candidates have graciously congratulated the winner.

"However, we agree with those officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) who stated that further progress is required to improve Nigeria's elections", the statement said.

The observers reported significant problems such as lack of voters registration lists and the untimely delivery of election materials to polling stations, and urged  INEC to take effective action to correct these deficiencies and to work with all stakeholders in doing so.

The US encouraged Nigeria to stay committed to the democratic process, the constitution, and the rule of law.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, along with the Minister of State I, Alhaji Jibril Maigari, and other senior officials of the ministry, yesterday, received in audience the Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Mr. Johnnie Carson, who is on a two-day visit to Nigeria, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The meeting which took place behind closed doors dwelt extensively on how to strengthen and deepen bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

During the meeting, both sides not only expressed mutual interests in working closely but also underscored the need to develop for the future, a road map for increased cooperation as strategic partners in bilateral, regional and global issues, including counter terrorism.

The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Robin Rene Sanders, accompanied Mr Carson to the meeting.
