The giddy INEC chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu, almost spoiled our joy the other day, when he was reported to have criticised the American electoral system which produced the first African-American president, Mr. Barack Obama, last week. While the whole world was celebrating the "American spirit," the failed INEC chairman was quoted by some national dailies as having called on the United States "to learn from Nigeria's electoral process …" What impudence!

If media reports on the Senator Sodangi probe report on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) administration between 1999 and 2007 are anything to rely on, it would not be out of place to conclude that the report was dead on arrival. Reason? The Senate is merely playing on time to allow the protagonists provide the coffin before the "ayes" would crucify and bury the "irritating" report. Make no mistakes about it, the Senate is walking a familiar terrain. It knows which report to permit and which to kill, even by slow lynching. Take the unwanted Freedom of Information Bill (FOIB) for example! That vexatious bill took only a few cunning streaks by the Senate leadership and the 107 wise men and women in the red chamber, to meet its waterloo. Whereas the FOIB died a sudden death in the green chamber, following the rambunctious disputations which trailed its introduction in the House, the Senate cunningly introduced impossible conditionalities to the passage of the bill. Which, of course, leaves no one in doubt that the FOIB was dead on arrival? Or, is it?
